• In the November 2003 issue of National Jurist was a little blurb on what I think takes the cake in how some law students will do anything for a big money job.So I did a search and found out some more on this story from one of my favorite bLAWgs, Ernie the Attorney. Here’s what Ernie said:
Matthew Toll is, to put it euphemistically, quite eager to get a job at a large law firm. From the looks of this it appears that he’s ready to sell his soul to the devil. Hope he doesn’t mind working in the heat.

(BTW, check the comments to this blog post. Toll himself replied to this.)

OK, if you’re interested in what Toll actually said in this insane cover letter to his resume, here is the original letter from The Smoking Gun.

The juiciest parts of the letter on point #8 where he promises prospective employers that, “If my mother’s funeral was the day of a key deposition, I would do the eulogy via teleconference after the deposition.”

He also says that if his wedding falls on the date of a big trial that he would postpone the wedding and that “If the wife to be did not like it, I would inform her that work comes before EVERYTHING ELSE and that if she does not like this, she is free to find a competing husband.”

What I find most shocking though is not the fact that this dude sent out this letter (it is rather obscene but not unusual. At least Toll is honest that he will do just about anything that is legal for money. He might be brazen about being a corporate whore but at least he is honest.), but rather that he has reportedly actually had several interviews as a result of the press he got from this!!!

I personally think that while Matthew Toll may be selling his soul to the devil, it is the legal profession itself that has gone to hell.
