Yahoo News/AP: Bush Nominates Roberts for Chief Justice

Boy howdy what a mess… the only good thing about this that I can see is that Roberts will make a better chief justice than Rehnquist (I don’t like to speak ill of the dead, so I’ll leave it at that). Otherwise, it seems pretty stupid to me to appoint a complete novice (Roberts doesn’t even have much experience on the circuit level) to be chief justice. It would have been a much better move to pick a veteran for the job, and preferably a centrist (since the Chief Justice will often negotiate to put together a majority opinion)

Politically for Bush it does speak to how much of a pickle he is in. (picking a current justice to be the chief would have been too costly politically, since all of the conservatives on the court have a well-established record that would be easy to pick apart). — It looks like he is seeking a fast slam dunk nomination (having the confirmation done by october is nuts to me) so that he can avoid having a third front to fight on politically (since he is already cooked with Iraq and Katrina)
