This afternoon I was thinking, wouldn’t it be cool if there was a super-small linux-based computer that used flash memory instead of a hard drive. Sorta a hybrid between a laptop computer and a PDA.
And as it turns out, Target beat to the punch with what I thought was a brilliant idea.
One thing though… 2 GB seems a bit small to me, now that 4 and 8 GB flash drives are pretty cheap.
wow that is awesome. I might get one. The thing is, you don’t really store anything on this, just surf. With the usb ports, you can use a regular flash drive to store and move between the notebook and your main desktop. It won’t work as the main ‘puter for most folks.
For instance, here’s a super-cheap 4GB flash drive…

I’ve researched this a bit and Tangent does make these with more storage, and a few more features. See http://www.tangent.com/epc/epcspecs.htm
I also saw a rumor/report they are also going to release a line with 8.5 in. screens that runs windoze.
I’ve had this thing in my amazon.com shopping cart for months. I’m straddling the fence between the 2gb surf and the 4gb. Can’t decide. Maybe while I’m debating with myself they’ll come out with the 4gb in all 5 colors rather than just 3. Sweet.
We just bought the eeepc 900. It has the 8.9 screen a 12 gb hdd (sdhc) and has Windows XP installed. It boots up in less than 15 seconds. Found it on eBay brand new with a $100 rebate. I added a 16 gig sdhc disk and used info from the user’s boards to load PhotoShop 6 and PageMaker onto that drive. It is very fast, convenient than carry (weighs a lot less than my Dell 600m) and is perfect for travel.
