Christianity & Social Justice Conference, September 23-24, 2005

We are announcing “Christianity & Social Justice,” a conference that will take place at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond on Friday and Saturday, September 23 and 24. This free conference is open to the general public and is being co-sponsored by the UCO Democratic Socialists, the Association for Women’s Studies, the Gay Alliance for Tolerance and Equality, Phi Alpha Theta, and The Interfaith Alliance of Oklahoma.

I’m very excited about this (mostly because I’m going to be presenting at this, alongside my pal and Okie Green co-chair Rachel Jackson… she isn’t on the schedule yet because of a last minute change, but she will be there — I think we’re going to talk about “Is capitalism Christian?” but focus particularly on the Christian influences, if any, of third party anti-capitalist politics both historically in the Oklahoma Socialist Party of the 19-teens, and today in the Oklahoma Green Party)

I have to say though that I’m a bit intimidated (in a good way) by the other presenters at the conference: Jim Bissett (author of the best book on the Oklahoma agrarian-socialist movement… see the link on the left-hand side of this page to order his book), Conna Wilkinson (urban social justice minister), John Mkhize (who will share of his experiences in South Africa… which I’m super-excited to hear as I missed his recent guest preaching at Joy Mennonite Church and the Rev. Paula Sophia Schonauer (who I admire so much for her courage to stand up for justice and equality), and others that I dont know yet, but look forward to hearing.

On a sidenote, Rachel and I will be selling the infamous Red Flag shirts at the conference. (we will be donating some from shirt sales to the UCO Democratic Socialists)
