MSNBC/AP: U.S. has detained 83,000 in anti-terror effort — About 14,500 still in custody, mostly in Iraq

On Capitol Hill, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is leading a campaign to ban cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment of prisoners in U.S. custody.

The administration says the legislation could tie the president’s hands.

Vice President Dick Cheney has pressed lawmakers to exempt the CIA.

“There’s an enemy that lurks and plots and plans and wants to hurt America again. And so you bet we will aggressively pursue them. But we will do so under the law,” President Bush said last week.

It is hard to say original things about such levels of depraved tyranny. I don’t mean to overstate the case, but I don’t see the difference in the Cheney doctrine (that terror suspects who have not had a fair trial don’t deserve one because they are less than human and deserve bad treatment) and the Nazi doctrine (that Jews were said to be less than human and deserve bad treatment).

What do we do in days like these? How can we pretend that this is not going on? How can we live life in comfort while knowing that our tax dollars being used at this very moment to torture human beings who are “made in the image of God” (to quote the good book)?
